Anggaran & Buku

17:04:00

Anda pecinta buku?

Melantur & World Book Day

15:51:00

Barbara Hatley. Javanese Performances on an Indonesian Stage: Contesting Culture, Embracing Change. Alamak, abot nemen rasane.

Hehe.

Yuk, berbagi pengalaman dengan buku!

Hard-Boiled Wonderland and The End of The World

09:30:00

After I look over my blog, several last post looked pathetic. So let's restart with something neutral. Here is my book review, as published on c20-library.net. Enjoy!
The first thing caught after you opened Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World book is a map: The End of the World map. It brought questions to the mind and made the readers put some expectations: Will it be a challenging journey through the places described in the map? Is it medieval era? And other map-related questions that popped will be crushed to the 1st chapter detailing description. It’s just like Murakami said greeting warmly to the readers, “Welcome to my surreal (book) world.”

Tips: Try to get patient and keep the pace until 5th chapter in one go. Then I bet you can’t stop slurping the story even you’re not completely sure about the vocabulary.

The superb storyline illustration comes from here. Click the picture to enjoy.
In this book, Murakami brought us into an absurd and adventurous storyline. The feeling of thriller and detective stories twisted with a lot of science explanations in every chapter’s corner. We could feel like having musical scene by the rifle of songs’ line here and there, but at the next flip we started the absolute silence; the indefinite solitude. Even the protagonist had polarized character: easygoing but a loner, dreamer yet realistic.

After all of the detail and complicated story that bring awe to the readers, somehow Hard-Boiled feels quite Hollywood-ish. The Western culture which Murakami attached was like foamy milk part in a cup of cappuccino; it dissolved, blended and felt in every sip. The ending was quite easy to guess and the heroic tale seems fulfilled the story gauge. Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World was the exact previous work of Norwegian Wood, the notable mega-bestseller of Haruki Murakami, among Japan and other countries. Perhaps, Hard-Boiled didn’t have as much exposure as its kohai* but the Tanizaki Prize (received in 1985) could show how the books had a respected value in Japanese literary.

This is my first Murakami’s. I chose the title based on the date of first edition printed. It’s the oldest in c2o library’s collection. It’s my bad for thinking too deep in each word that made me lost the bigger picture till the 5th chapter. After trying to re-read again in once sitting, I got my nerves back and the thrills began.

Best part for reading this was know that the author participate in translating & adapting the book in English. It made every open-dico-and-thesaurus-regularly paid off, yet understand how the native language disparity vanished in every un-rhyme sentences which linked beautifully.

Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in Culinary Underbelly [Review]

17:38:00

as published in c2o-library .

I thought it was a spark of missing a location called restaurant, last place where I worked for, but my chemistry with this book definitely beyond “missing”.

C2o library classified “Kitchen Confidential, Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly” by Anthony Bourdain into business/management section, but I personally disagree. It’s a memoir. I didn’t said that the book doesn’t told us how to manage a restaurant, yes it is, but the real sensation is how Bourdain made the reader as his fellow traveler to traverse an up-down yet magnetizing adventure at his chefdom life.

In a narrative way, Bourdain start to steal attention in his Appetizer part. He promised nothing of this book, which become more appealing because of my triggered mind with “the nothingness”. Then flowing nonstop as a sushi bar, the journey begins and every part of food and restaurant revealed. Bourdain used, and repetitively overused, tons of adjective word to describe as vivid image as he could for every part of the book. You will unconsciously salivating for reading menu description and having goosebumps for a story of savage owner.

Don’t be surprised for the amount of cursing along Kitchen Confidential. It is harsh, maybe, for some readers but it also shows the honest side on how the stories being delivered. You will meet the hard part of being a chef: your uncontrollable cooks, fussy but mega-billionaire owner, customer complaints, sassy purveyor, and of course drugs and sex. It is amazing how he brought all of these smoothly and enjoyable to read.

My favorite part is Second Course where Bourdain even give you step-by-step on How to Cook like A Pro! Through the book, Bourdain give whole clue involving food, not only for restaurateur, chef, or any people who involved in restaurant business, but also for a real stranger who never heard what demi-glace is. He could show many aspects that we could learn from food: politic, strategy, joke, romance, game, ambition, etc.

When I read Kitchen Confidential, I burst in laughter, my heart skipped a beat, and I do evaluating myself again and again. I have a lot of fun reading this book, I hope it’ll be yours also!

Cheapskating!

00:30:00

"Sometimes, being financially limited made people smarter in using cheapskate."
=P

I love doing cheapskate. Not only after I read B.T.D.T.G.T.T.T.S by Risyiana Muthia and Emeralda N.A. but a long time ago before it. Yes, I've already read this book. It mentions cheapskate too, even give you some guidance.

Anyway, what is cheapskate Von? Based on the book, cheapskate is: using creativity to minimize your expense. In dramatic way >> it's an art which only chosen people did whose bring the efficient & economical principle into advanced level! =D It sounds opportunist? Off course. But I don't think it's dangerous or harm others, then go on beibi! =P

I'm a real cheapskater, and I'm proud of it. Hehehe. Call me as the laziest person in this earth, and I won't bothered, because it's true. I'm so lazy but I'm greedy in other side. I have many goals, targets in my life. That's why I have to think harder on how should I spend my energy and source to the least, but still getting the maximum effect. It is the very basic idea of cheapskate. I'll tell you the example: I should go to the library in the campus. It has big square yard in the front. There is a pathway in the side, with several trees which covered you from the sun. I choose NOT walking in the path, but walking diagonally across the yard, in a fast pace. Why? 1st, based on Pythagoras law, diagonal side of  the right triangle is the shortest than the sum of its two sides. 2nd, based on basic physics & biology law, the calories which I need to traverse the yard will still be reduced by the reduction of fluid made of sunlight on our body surface area. That's why we should walk in fast pace under the direct sunlight, for avoiding dehydration.

Several people laughing when I explained all of this. They said: come on Von, why are you so serious just about walking to the library? You even use many theories! I just smile and said on my mind: "Be my guess". There is a reason why you've already learned about Pythagoras since you're elementary school, learned IPA or IPS. If these simple theories could not be applied into your life, how about the complicated one? I believe the theorist already have long process before their thoughts formally called as a theory. I respect the process by learning and applying the theory. For "going to library" case, I don't need to think, FYI. I just think of it once, a long time ago. Then for the second and third, I just remembered and make this simple thing into my habit. Habit doesn't need thinking process. At all.

Yesterday, I did a cheapskate move that I'm proud of. Haha. What is it? Buying fruits in supermarket. Hihi. Firstly, I just getting better from sick. I have ISPA/Upper Respiratory Tract Infections. And now I'm in healing phase where my appetite getting higher and have my hunger easily. As my sickness, I could not eat fried food, instant noodles, ice cream, cold food, peanuts, chocolate and every food which made my throat itchy. Regarding that I lived in Surabaya, it is very hard for finding snacks with those criteria. I thought and re-thought, then I choose for buying fruits. Even fruits, I still could not eating fruits which have gum (usually into dicotyledon class). Fortunately, the yummy and forbidden fruits averagely expensive, then allowed fruits were quite cheap. Ha! I choose for buying Salak Pondoh (Salacca edulis) & Red Guava (Psidium guajava). There are 2 kind Salak Pondoh: export quality and local/ordinary. Do you know how much the price difference? Twice! In fact, you just need spend 5 minutes for finding the good Salak Pondoh in local/ordinary basket, then you'll get the same quality as the other one. I got 800grs Salak in IDR 5600, in a very good quality. Then I got 600grs Guava in IDR 4500. Cheap! And healthy!

Some people advised me for buying the fruits in traditional market for having cheap fruits. As my experience before, you'll have a good price in traditional market (in Surabaya) if you have at least 1 to 3 conditions: #1, buying seasonal fruits #2, you are good in bargaining #3, you could speak Maduranese. Yes, seriously. And I'm not good at those three, that's why I choose buying in supermarket where I could compare the price directly. Don't worry, supermarket always have SALE section. =P

Being cheapskater exercises me for making decision sharply and faster. Why? Because I could not waste my time on thinking one subject only. Now, I even try to practice how thinking efficiently and as much thoughts in one go: multitasking. Yes, it's another thing mentioned in B.T.D.T.G.T.T.S., and I'm on my process for mastering it. Hihi.

Then, how about you? Have an interest in cheapskating?
Need some help?
Read the book!

Book's Day Out (23-24 April 2011) in c2o Library

07:15:00

It's quite late for telling stories about Book's Day Out, but after read the reportage here (with my photo & Kanti as the first photo. bwahahaha), I want to tell it based on my view. =D

The Book's Day Out (BDO) in c2o Library were actually a peak event of c2o's agenda in April. At the day, every postcard from the "Postcards from Bookworms" were exhibited.
Postcards from Bookworms publication
But not only postcards, BDO brought us into Book Swap, t-shirt sablonage, and delicious cookies!
My favorite one, peanut butter cookies!
I came with my books to be swapped, but actually I didn't really wanna swap it, just give it to c2o library. Why? Because it was my college books. =P Kat, the c2o owner, said that they also need a basic social studies book. So I think my books will fit in the criteria. =)

I & Kanti, went there and forced to make a postcard. I didn't have any idea at first, but after look Kanti grab some asturo bright color origami paper, I suddenly remember about my favorite book: L.S.D.L.F. by Syahmedi Dean. L.S.D.L.F. is Lontong Sayur dalam Lembaran Fashion, the first of tetralogy Dean's novel. It is the first book which made my eyes wide opened into fashion things. It is lovely, for sure. The cover of L.S.D.L.F. dominate by black, and accentuated by green, mustard and white. That's why I made my postcard like this:
Me & My Postcard. =)
In the process of making postcard
Me & Kanti seeing the postcards
At the afternoon, there was a presentation of postcard maker. I didn't attend, because I've already had another meeting. =( But overall, the event was great. I think it's a new way to support and enhance passion in reading a book. All those beautiful photo above were taken by Erlin Goentoro. (Thank you, Erlin!)You could see another picture taken by her in her flickr account. Anyway, don't forget to visit http://c2o-library.net for knowing much more about the event and everything about c2o library. Keep reading books, fellas!

A Happy Ending Weekend.

22:50:00

February 13th till 15th , I called it as a long weekend. I still worked at 14th actually, but because things went smoothly, I rather counted it into a holiday too. =)

Started in Saturday, I went to Sekolah Alam Insan Mulia (SAIM) for being a moderator of "Creative Movie Workshop with Mathias Muchus". It was a very long time not conducting as a moderator of discussion or workshop. Pfiuh. Thanks God, Om Muchus helped me a lot and we made a good show.

A sight from the front of stage
Who could make everyone do this than Om Muchus?

It is truly "sekolah alam". Caterpillar on my table! =D
Starstrukk! =P
Me and Om Muchus. =)
After did the duty at SAIM, I directly went to c2o for had a "KopDar" a.k.a Offline Meeting of Goodreads Indonesia region Surabaya. It was great. I met several new friends with a same bold hobby: Reading books. It's interesting, knowing people had more crazier passion in books. Rhea, for example: the moderator, had already read 449 books. Roos, the ex-moderator of Goodreads Indonesia, had already read 758 books. Shoo! What was that?? Haha. I know I wasn't diligent enough to keep my "already-read" books into a record before. That's why I love to join Goodreads. You could see at the right column of this blog, the widget of my Goodreads account. Don't bother to click and join, fellas. We could discuss books much much and much further there. =)
*another complete story of KopDar written by Rhea, click here*

left to right: Rhea, Azza, Hilman, Novri
1st row, left to right: Novri, Azza, Rhea, Yossi. 2nd row: Hilman, Agung, Ari, Tinta, me, Heni.
Sunday morning, my boyfriend accompanied me to find a breakfast and we found a delicious food called Nasi Bakar. It's located across of Giant Hypermarket in following street Kombespol M Duryat. There are 2 choices: chicken or tuna. At first glance, I thought it will be only steamed rice and chicken/tuna inside, but surprisingly it's completed with spiced papaya leaves, chopped Peda (salted fish) and green chilli sauce. Yummo yummo!

At the day, me and cak Ikin went to re-supplied our merchandise product and attended Cergamboree meeting. The weather uprising suddenly. I got sunburn and fever in the afternoon. I didn't strong enough to attend my friends album launching: Bestfriend Project. Sad. ='(
And because of my fever too, my boy need to pick me to my office on Monday. Sorry to bother you Cheri. Alhamdulillah, it was going better and better which I could had meeting in Monday night with PakLemon & cak Ikin and talked about my newest project. I really can't wait to tell you all, but I had to keep my mouth shut until February 25th. Wish us luck, please? ;)

February 14th, where people celebrated Valentine days, I still doing work and work. Pathetic? No. Even you could think worse when I told you that those day were my a-month-anniversary too with my boy. Hehe. We've already made a promise to celebrate it on February 15th, and we did it! Yeay! He successfully surprised me with a bunch of gifts, packed in a cute box too. I feel so guilty because I just give him a piece of batik tie. =(
I give u only the sneak peek. =P
But the thing which made my tears fell down at a time was his letter. The letter which made me want to promise, to struggle in a future with him. I'd like to quote last 2 paragraphs of his letter:
Aku cuma ingin menyebut kata "cinta",

Tiga puluh hari menjadi bukan lagi soal lama & sebentar,
melainkan menjadi perkara pembuktian atas suatu yang lacur tadi.
Atas Cinta.
Aku Cinta.
Dan aku tahu jika engkau tahu tentang Cinta.
=')

Cheri, thank you for made my happy ending weekend.
And I believe, you are the one which made my life had its happy ending.
mille bisous,
Ta Cherie.

Mari Bertemu, Mari Bicara. =)

17:14:00

Seno Gumira, Pandji Pragiwaksono, Lulu Ratna

Dan seperti apa yang Fajar bilang tadi:
Pertemuan dan perbincangan itu memberi energi baru. Energi yang berbeda
Yap. Maybe I'm restless, but fulfilling myself with the new energy will boost my spirit, add the new perspective, rise my smile again. The chat really works. Thanks Fajar.

=)

*eniwei, gak foto sama Fajar, malah difoto. hehe*

*sama @kantifiona, pamer bukuu!*

BlogWalking, BlogReading: Ayo Jalan-Jalan ke Blog-Blog Ini! =)

22:47:00

Poet, my beloved darlaa would treat me and office fellas for her birthday. My boss(es) just available in 5pm. Sembari menunggu, ngobrol seru sama Mbak @gigihrc tentang buku (yang akhirnya merembet kemana-mana sih, =P). Dia menulis everythings related with books. This is her photos from her blog: http://bacabukubagus.wordpress.com

Untuk penggemar buku-buku karya pengarang asing, hm, this blog obviously will fit to you.

Time passed by, mbak Gigih pun akan berangkat nonton Robin Hood (Good movie, another kind of Hood version. I love this bloody, manly Robin Hood). Saya pun menuju kantor, mau numpang documenting data buat skripsi, sekalian nunggu orang kantor pada ngumpul untuk makan-makan. Senyampang (anyone use this word?

Siapa sih Aldo Sianturi?

*Music Sharing Session di Surabaya, bareng @aldosianturi, @afimotik, @ninilmotik, mas Bambang Morning After, mas MayoVOX*

My bosses ready to go after their meeting, dan kami sekantor pun makan-makan di Leko *spesialis iga penyet* (itu tagline-nya loh. hehe). Setumpuk doa buat Poet.... Cup-cup-mwah!

P.S: Love to share these fellas!
